Scouts will paint plow blades
CRANBERRY TWP — Boy and Girl Scouts will show off their artistic talents and join what has become a tradition in the township public works department — the painting of its snow plow blades with works of art.
Beginning May 19, the first day of National Public Works Week, Scouts will spend their evenings emblazoning seven of the truck-mounted snow plow blades used by Cranberry with painted designs of their own creation.
The plow painting program had been a success in previous years at Haine Middle and Rowan Elementary schools in Cranberry with art students showcasing their school pride, according to township officials.
Students at Haine and Rowan have been painting plows back since at least 2005.
This year’s program partners with Scouts to raise awareness about the work required to maintain their community.
The decorative themes to be painted on the plow blades, each of which range from 8 to 11 feet across, will be designed by the Scouts and jointly selected by Cranberry’s Public Works Department and Scout leaders.
“Their themes will emphasize the Scout spirit,” said Jason Dailey, public works director.
A protective coating of polyurethane over the paintings will be applied at the end of the project.
