PITTSBURGH — A former student athlete at Butler High School has filed a federal lawsuit claiming that the district did not adequately address his concussion that he claims occurred in a gym class in 2009 and continued with added injuries at a football practice that same day.

Robert Wellman, whose age and address were not revealed in the lawsuit, filed the suit against the school district and John Wyllie, high school principal.

The suit claims that Wellman was not cleared by his doctor to participate in football, but was further injured on the sidelines of a game as a coach directed him to hold a yardage marker on one of the sidelines and he was knocked down by a player going out of bounds.

The suit asks the school district to pay Wellman’s expenses for attending St. Joseph’s High School, where he transferred after the student’s claim that the Butler district did not address his anxiety over attending school.

He also asked for unidentified monetary damages.
