Late night fire destroys garage in city

BUTLER TWP — A Sunday night blaze razed a garage on Clark Avenue.
Chief Bruce Mazzanti of the South Butler Volunteer Fire Department said this morning that the fire started in the garage and spread to the roof above the attic of the attached house at 220 Clark Ave.
A woman, whose name was unavailable, and a 3-year-old child escaped the single-story brick home without injury.
Butler Ambulance personnel checked them to ensure they did not suffer from smoke inhalation.
A Butler state police fire marshal is investigating the cause.
Mazzanti said the woman suspected there was fire after hearing sounds coming from the building.
While searching the house, she spotted smoke coming into the living area. She and a neighbor both called 911.
Mazzanti said the Butler chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the woman because smoke and water damage left the home temporarily uninhabitable.
About 50 firefighters responded to the 9:44 p.m. 911 call.
Mazzanti estimated damages at $40,000 for the garage and house with another $6,000 to $8,000 for a car in the garage that was destroyed.
The Greenwood Village, Lyndora, Mercer Road, Meridian and Penn Township volunteer fire departments assisted South Butler. Crews cleared the scene at 12:24 this morning.
