Plan B ruling lauded

I applaud the decision of federal Judge Edward Korman, a Ronald Reagan appointee, to reverse the federal government’s prohibition on allowing those less than 17 years old to obtain Plan B (“morning-after pill”) without a prescription.

As Korman appropriately noted, political pandering to the Religious Right — with no concern for liberty — prompted the decision he courageously overturned.

A similar political pander also underlies the decision by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s approval of a law restricting abortion rights, banning abortion providers from teaching sex education in public schools, and nearly conferring personhood on a fetus.

Such laws not only restrict a woman’s right to life, they substitute government coercion, in the service of religion, for the reasoned judgment of a health care provider.
