The Butler County commissioners today adopted two procedural changes to public meetings, limiting the time they can give reports and respond to residents’ comments.

Beginning at the May 8 meeting, the commissioners will be restricted to 10-minute reports and 2-minute responses to public comment.

Through Wednesday, there were no time limits for the commissioners to talk.

Commissioner Jim Eckstein opposed both changes, saying they were attempts to prevent him from exposing information to the public.

Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, disagreed, saying the moves were done to shorten meetings and encourage residents to speak before the board.

McCarrier said people are intimidated from participating in public comment because of Eckstein’s treatment of speakers.

Commissioner Dale Pinkerton sided with McCarrier.
