JACKSON TWP — The Butler girls track and field team’s long winning streak against rival Seneca Valley was in jeopardy Monday afternoon.
With just the 1,600-meter relay remaining, the Golden Tornado held a slim 74-71 lead over SV. A Seneca Valley victory in the event would have handed the Section 3-AAA meet to the host Raiders.
But Butler’s quartet of Kayla Greygor, Alyssa DiPippa, Macy Stalnaker and Amanda Wiest finished first in the event with a time of four minutes and 20 seconds, as the Tornado escaped NexTier Stadium with a 79-71 win. SV’s foursome turned in a time of 4:27.
Butler’s boys won by a wider margin, 92-58.
Butler’s effort in the field helped to make up for a 51-36 deficit in track events.
For SV coach Ray Peaco, the close loss was a tough pill to swallow.
“I’m not sure of the last time our girls beat Butler,” he said. “It could be about 20 years ago. I thought today was the day.”
Butler (3-1) was led by Paige Allen’s three individual wins in the 100 and 200 dash and the long jump. Ava Bonetti took the shot put and discus.
Butler also received solid efforts that yielded crucial second and third-place finishes.
“We have been dealing with a lot of injuries,” Butler coach Annessa . “Today, we had a lot of younger kids who are not used to scoring for us step up.”
Sophomore Katelyn Stebbins won the 100 hurdles and triple jump for the Raiders (2-2).
“She injured herself at the WPIAL Championships last year and is coming back into form for us,” said Peaco.
Like Allen’s showing in the girls competition, Butler’s Anthony Yurkovich won three events — all three jumps — for Butler’s boys (4-0).
Winning two individual events for the Tornado were Levi Leyland (110, 300 hurdles) and Travis Reed (shot put and discus).
“We had a lot of kids set (personal bests) today,” said Butler coach Rick Schontz. “This was a great team effort and a great way to enter our invite Friday.”
SV senior Forrest Barnes won the 100 and 200 dash for the Raiders (3-1).
“Jordan Brown came out for the team this year,” said Peaco. “With him and Forrest in the sprint events, that’s significant for us.”
