GE Transportation to move 950 jobs out of Erie

ERIE — Erie County officials say GE Transportation plans to cut as many as 950 northwestern Pennsylvania jobs and move them to the company’s new facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

County Executive Barry Grossman announced the news this morning.

GE Transportation is Erie’s largest employer. The company builds coal mining equipment and has been hit by a slump in the mining business.

Unions had expressed concern about a possible shift to Fort Worth, saying nonunion employees there earn substantially less than their union counterparts in Erie.

GE has a related plant in Grove City.
