Brush fire destroys Franklin Township barn

FRANKLIN TWP — A brush fire this afternoon led to the destruction of a barn.

Firefighters responded to the call at 12:24 p.m. The fire destroyed the barn and an old, unused vehicle adjacent to the barn.

The barn, located at 202 Pflugh Road, was unused and was empty.

“Nothing of any value except the barn,” property owner Craig Diehl said of the damage.

Diehl said he was burning paper at about 10:30 or 11 a.m., about 80 feet from the barn, when the fire mostly went out.

While away to get more paper to burn, the fire grew through a gusting wind and spread across the grass, eventually igniting the barn.

Firefighters were concerned that nearby trees would catch fire.

The Diehl family used to keep horses in the barn, but they have not been there in a long time.

Diehl said that he was unsure what will happen with the barn’s ruins or the property.

Firefighters from Prospect, Connoquenessing, Greenwood Village, Meridian and Portersville responded to the fire. As of 2 p.m., firefighters continued to put out the flames.
