Fire destroys auto repair garage

LIBERTY TWP, Mercer County — An auto repair garage was destroyed Tuesday night in a large fire that seven fire companies responded to.
The fire at Myers Auto Repair and Towing on Browntown Road just north of the Butler County line started a little before 7:45 p.m.
The Pine Township Engine Company arrived on scene first.
“It was pretty much fully involved when we arrived,” said Chief Chris Holmes.
The Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company arrived soon after and was the lead fire company.
The 30-foot-by-60-foot wood garage, owned by Clarence “Sonny” Myers, had two vehicles inside, one that belonged to a customer and one that belonged to Myers. Both were destroyed.
A vehicle outside the garage that Myers was restoring was heavily damaged, and the garage's tow truck also was damaged.
A mobile home where Myers and his wife live as well as a camper that Myers' son lives in both caught fire, but fire crews were able to save both.
“(They were) scorched a little bit, but not too bad,” said Slippery Rock Chief Dave Taggart.
Myers and his wife were not at home when the fire started, but their son was, and he reported it.
Taggart said that the fire likely was accidental and that a wood burner in the garage may be the cause.
He said that damage could top $100,000. Myers is insured.
