Accident closed Route 228 this morning

MIDDLESEX TWP — A tractor-trailer early this morning crashed on Route 228 near Rolling Mills Drive, spilling more than 100 gallons of diesel fuel and closing the busy road for about two hours.

The truck driver, 37-year-old Allison Swesey, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Township police said Swesey shortly after 4:15 a.m. lost control of the truck on the icy road. The rig, owned by Black Horse Carrier of Saxonburg, jackknifed and hit a guardrail.

The crash punctured the truck's fuel tank, spilling about 130 gallons of fuel. The county's hazardous materials team was called to handle the spill, police said.

Middlesex Township and Saxonburg volunteer firefighters and a state Department of Transportation crew assisted in the cleanup.
