KITTANNING — Authorities are investigating the circumstances of a fight early Sunday morning that left a Butler County man dead.

James P. Sullivan, 39, of Donegal Township suffered severe injuries in the fracas that happened about 1:35 a.m. on Montieth Street in Kittanning, state police said.

He was pronounced dead less than 90 minutes later at ACMH Hospital in nearby East Franklin Township.

The state police major case team, Kittanning police and the Armstrong County Coroner's office are investigating but have only released few details about the incident.

“We're still piecing a lot of things together,” Cpl. Joseph Murphy of the Kittanning barracks said this morning.

A police news release said Sullivan “engaged in a physical altercation with a known individual that resulted in his death.”

An autopsy Sunday determined the cause of death was injuries to his abdomen and head, said Armstrong County Deputy Coroner Brian Myers.

Troopers did not identify the other man involved in the fight.

Sullivan and his rival may have been drinking before the altercation, which happened 50 yards from a bar, authorities said.
