I am writing in response to Peter Connor’s letter of March 4, “Sunnyview fundraising.”

Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was built as a home for the less fortunate. Today, no one is refused care regardless of stature or wealth.

This universal care for everyone, regardless of ability to pay, has made county homes such as Sunnyview obsolete.

The past year, as in many previous years, Sunnyview finished in the red — in 2012, by more than $800,000.

The commissioners already have done the fundraiser by making taxpayers cover Sunnyview’s losses.

I think the county should lease or sell Sunnyview. With the current cuts to Medicare and the unknown cuts due to the sequestration, the losses at Sunnyview will continue to ride on the backs of taxpayers if nothing is done.
