VALENCIA — A construction worker faces a hearing on charges he broke into a borough home that he was working on.

Randall C. Barksdale, 26, of Wexford is accused of burglarizing the unfinished house on Sterrett Street last fall while the homeowners were away. He allegedly stole jewelry, some of which was sold for money.

One gold ring fetched $1,550 from a jewelry store in Allegheny County, according to court documents.

Adams Township police on Feb. 25 arrested Barksdale on charges of burglary, trespass, theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies. He is in the Butler County Prison on $20,000 bail.

Police suspect Barksdale went to Fred and Ruth Preik’s house and hid under one of the decks until the couple’s dog-sitter left. The Preiks were on vacation at the time.

Barksdale apparently knew the homeowners would be away, police said. The couple had hired him to do construction work at their house.

The Preiks upon returning home reported missing an engagement ring, several gold chains and a silver bracelet. Other missing items included seven pieces of sterling silverware and prescription painkillers.

Investigators on Feb. 15 learned that some of the jewelry was sold at a store in Ohio Township, Allegheny County.

That information helped lead police to Barksdale, documents said.
