Depending where commenters were in Butler County this morning, they could have driven through snow or saw no snow at all.

A half foot or more of heavy, wet, slushy snow coated roads in parts of Butler County early today.

But those in the northern part of the county had no problems. There was no snow in Bruin, North Washington got a dusting, and Foxburg, just over the county in Clarion County, reported no snow.

While the snow was not the storm of the century, it was much worse than the 1 to 3 inches that most weather forecasters had predicted.

Buffalo Township may have hit the high mark at 13 inches. Sarver got socked with 9 inches, Zelienople with 6 inches.

In Butler, accumulation was about 5 inches.

But elsewhere, primarily north Route 422 motorists were wondering what all the fuss was about.

“Bruin got nothing,” said Bob Skrak, PennDOT’s maintenance manager in Butler County. “The dividing line was the Route 422 corridor. Down south they got it pretty good.”

There was so much snow so fast that most county schools canceled classes. But Karns City opened on a two-hour delay. Moniteau operated on its regular schedule.

By 12:30 a.m. today, snow started to fall in southern Butler County, and it kept coming.

“It was coming real quick,” Skrak said. “We were getting an inch-and-a half to 2 inches an hour for a white.”

PennDOT about 11 p.m. Tuesday pretreated some roads with brine solution and others with granulated salt, in anticipation of precipitation.

But the waves of white seemed unwavering.

“It was impossible to keep ahead of that,” Skrak admitted.
