Horses also precious

I am responding to Roy Andrews’ letter of Feb. 17, “Step up, horse lovers.” He was writing about the poor, unfortunate horses that need help.
Does Andrews realize that, unlike “consumable livestock,” horses are most always acquired as pets or working assets? To slaughter them would be inhumane and downright cruel.
As with other pets — dogs, cats, birds, etc. — we become attached to our extended “family members.” It would be unthinkable to slaughter “Rover” or “Kitty” because our economy is tight.
As to the expense for caring for horses — hay, oats, etc. — has Andrews seen the price of dog food, for instance? Nothing is cheap nowadays.
There is no way our children will go hungry because we provide food for our pets. With free-lunch programs, food stamps, etc., to ensure that families have food, Andrews’ point is moot.
What program is available for horses? Perhaps Andrews has a desire for a horse burger?
I’m so sorry there are others who abuse or neglect these beautiful animals. I am happy that horses can count on the Equine Angels — an organization that sees them for what they truly are, a gift from heaven for us to enjoy.
All living creatures are precious and should be treated as such.
