Seneca Valley’s Maddie Tretter swims the 100-yard breaststroke against Hampton Thursday night. She went on to win the event and the Raiders’ boys and girls swept the meet.
JACKSON TWP — With the season winding down, things are starting to heat up. The Seneca Valley swimming and diving teams are anticipating some rest before the upcoming WPIAL Class AAA Championships, but there was still a pair of dual meets left to tend to — Thursday’s matchup against Hampton and Thursday, Feb. 14 at Butler. Against the Talbots, both SV squads took off from the start, cruising to a 96-78 girls triumph and 94-54 boys victory. “All our returning WPIAL kids are faster at this point than last year,” Seneca Valley coach Brian Blackwell said. The Raiders’ girls team (6-3-1) had three swimmers who recorded top times in their respective events — Katie Miller (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke), Carley Belsterling (200 IM and 100 free) and Maddie Tretter (100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke). The trio each had a hand in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, joined by Katie Burkett, who also was part of the winning 200 free relay. The Talbots, led by first-year coach Alex Kubicek, had Kristen McKnight win both the 50 and 500 free. “We’re getting several great times under our belts,” Kubicek said. “Since we’re a new program, a new staff, new team, we’re trying to establish the fundamentals early. “We’re very tired, but we can start to taper people. ... We can start to train for the WPIAL (since their regular season is completed), rest a bit and focus on the championships.” Blackwell also noted freshman Kassi Grumski qualified for the WPIAL meet with her performance Thursday. “We have five freshmen girls, but we’ll be losing five seniors this year,” Blackwell said. “I’m going to miss all of them. They’ve been great leading by example and without their leadership, the younger girls might not have been able to do what they’ve done.” In the boys meet, the Raiders (5-5) had seven different individual winners — Michael Rhein (200 free), Spencer Tretter (200 IM), Michael Palaski (50 free), Miranda Deffenbaugh (diving), Ryan Cwik (100 fly), Jake Fausti (100 free) and Dan Barnes (100 breast). Tretter, Palaski, Cwik and Fausti, each helped two relay teams to victory while Rhein and Barnes aided in one relay win.
