Students to perform with district chorus
ADAMS TWP — Four members of Mars High School Chorus were selected by solo audition to perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 5 Chorus Festival, to be held today through Friday at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School in Midland, PA Seniors Chris Blahnik and Elizabeth Meyer and juniors Courtney Shaffer and Dalton Smith will perform alongside the best high school musicians from more than 50 school districts. Susan Medley, Washington & Jefferson College director of choral activities and music director of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale, will serve as guest conductor. The event will conclude with a public concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School. Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the door. Students’ works selected for exhibit ADAMS TWP — Several works by Mars High School students were accepted to the 2013 Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art & Writing Awards to be held Friday through Feb. 24 at La Roche College’s Student Union Center and Cantellops Gallery. Students include seniors Alessandro Armbrust, Andrea Dean, Hayley Esterline, Rachel Rectenwald, Emily Thomas and Alexa Titchen; juniors Frankie Petrini, Madeleine Salapow and Taylor Zediker; and sophomores Nicholas Deleone and Osyana Roman. The exhibit will feature more than 950 artworks by high school students from throughout the Pittsburgh region selected from 2,100 entries in this year’s competition. Winners will be awarded a Gold Key, Silver Key or an Honorable Mention. All winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony at 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at La Roche College’s Kerr Sports & Fitness Center. Gold Key winners’ works will advance to the 2013 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in New York, N.Y. Book drive to help needy children ADAMS TWP — Mars Primary Center will hold a “Books for Kids of Butler County” book drive, Monday through Feb. 15. The school will be collecting new books to be donated to Head Start classrooms throughout Butler County. Donations can be dropped off at the school’s main office during school hours.
