PINE TWP — The second half of section play is proving to be a slippery slope for the Seneca Valley boys basketball team.
The Raiders are just hoping to find their footing before the WPIAL playoffs begin.
They suffered their third straight section defeat Friday night, a 61-49 loss at Pine-Richland. The Rams’ win avenges a 55-48 loss at Seneca Valley Jan. 8.
Though SV has already clinched a postseason berth, it has just two games remaining — against Hampton and Butler — to gain momentum before the tournament begins.
Over the final three periods Friday, Pine-Richland out-rebounded the Raiders 28-17. In the final stanza, SV shot just 2-of-13 from the field.
“They played like the playoff team tonight,” said SV assistant coach Jim Pyle of the Rams. “They outworked us in every aspect of the game.”
A 20-6 run in the second quarter gave the Rams the lead and they led 43-36 entering the final quarter. But the Raiders closed the gap to just one point with a 6-0 run.
Pine-Richland (10-9, 3-9) then embarked on an 18-7 run to close the game, beginning with Shea Sullivan’s basket with 4:37 remaining. In the final minutes, the Rams sank all eight of their free throws.
“I thought rebounding was the difference for us tonight,” said Rams’ coach Brian Gaetano. “And we hit our free throws. In the first game against Seneca, we were just 2-of-8 in the fourth quarter.”
Raiders’ coach Victor Giannotta was unavailable for comment.
