Howling overnight winds left 443 homes in Butler County without electricity this morning. More than 100 were out in Penn Township, but all are expected to be back online today.

“We’ve had a couple tree incidents,” said Rob Lombardo, spokesman for First Energy Corp., the parent company of Penn Power and West Penn Power.

“We’re glad it’s that low,” he said. “When you have wind shears that come through like that ... for us, it’s pretty good.”

A tree blocked Spithaler School Road in Forward Township, and power lines were down in Lancaster, Mercer, Middlesex and Winfield townships, as well as in Butler, according to Butler County’s 911 Center.

The winds, which came out of the west and northwest, were higher overnight, but gusts up to 35 mph are expected throughout today, said Tom Green, National Weather Service, meteorologist. They will decrease overnight.

The overnight temperatures dropped after they reached 68 degrees in Pittsburgh Wednesday, breaking a nearly century-old warm weather record for the date. The high eclipsed by two degrees the 66 recorded on the same date in Pittsburgh in 1916.

In contrast, Butler temperatures are expected to hover at 27 degrees all day today.
