Obama sworn in a president for second time

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama at about 11:50 a.m. took the ceremonial oath of office, heralding his second term as president.

He took the oath from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Just before that, Vice President Joe Biden took his ceremonial oath from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The president and vice president were formally sworn in during private ceremonies on Sunday since their terms began that day.

The president was cheered in the streets this morning as his motorcade slowly made its way down Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House and arrived at the Capitol.

He was speaking at noon to a huge crowd on the Mall and millions more watching on television.

The fanfare is extending across the nation’s capital, including the traditional inaugural parade thisd afternoon and glitzy formal balls tonight.

Obama, along with his family and Biden, began his day with a church service at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
