Too much bigness

We are a nation of excess. Everything is bigger here.

We have more prisons to house all our inmates. We have a bigger proportion of our citizens on drugs, both legal and illegal.

Our houses are bigger, our cars are bigger; our breasts are bigger, thanks to implants.

Our divorce rate is bigger. Even our politicians are bigger. For example, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is touted as a possible presidential candidate, is very representative of our population, given the high rate of obesity in this country.

We need bigger guns, and more of them. We have the biggest military, and the most expensive, of any other nation.

Four people killed in Benghazi set off a media frenzy and a call for action; 20 children killed in Newtown, Conn., is blamed on mental illness — he had no police record and you cannot put someone in an institution for being “weird.”

The National Rifle Association calls for hiring retired military to guard our schools. Let us hope they do not suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

If the NRA thinks more guns are the answer, why not go the American way — bazookas, grenade launchers and Stinger missiles?
