ADAMS TWP — A Forward Township man is wanted on charges he defrauded a former professional football player out of more than $11,500.

The suspect, Robert J. Osselborn, 41, allegedly took Tom Tumulty’s money for a hunting trip to Jackson Hole, Wyo., Adams Township police said.

However, on the day the trip was to take off in September, the plane never arrived at the Zelienople Airport and Osselborn also was a no-show.

District Judge Wayne Seibel on Dec. 28 issued an arrest warrant for Osselborn on felony counts of theft by deception, receiving stolen property and deceptive business practices.

Police said they began investigating the case Dec. 14 when the 39-year-old Tumulty of Adams Township showed up at the police station to report the alleged fraud.

Tumulty, a former University of Pittsburgh football standout, played three seasons as linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1996 to 1999.

He told police that a friend previously introduced him to Osselborn, who claimed to be affiliated with a travel guide company, according to court documents.

Osselborn in June allegedly told Tumulty that his producer wanted the former pro football player to be part of a hunting team on a trip to Wyoming,

The trip was purported to be filmed for possible later broadcast on television, police said.

Tumulty agreed to participate in the trip after Osselborn told the alleged victim that his father could also attend.

He gave Osselborn $4,000 in August, and another $7,500 in September.

The money was to be eventually returned to Tumulty, he told police, as part of the agreement with Osselborn.

He said Osselborn also promised him an additional $10,000 should the footage of the hunt be aired on TV, according to a police affidavit.

“Tumulty said Osselborn always had the right answers and things to say,” the affidavit said.

But when it was time to fly out of the Zelienople Airport, police said, the plane to take Tumulty and his father to Wyoming never arrived.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Department is looking for Osselborn on a warrant on felony charges in another suspected theft scam in May in Pine Township, Allegheny County.

That arrest warrant was issued Dec. 19, court records showed.

Additionally, Osselborn is awaiting trial in Lawrence County on theft by deception charges in a 2010 case.
