Accidential shooting claims life of 21-year-old
CENTER TWP — A 21-year-old man died early this morning after he apparently shot himself by accident at a house in the 200 block of Pine Tract Road, authorities said. Matthew Judge Hughes of Butler died of a gunshot wound to his chest shortly before 1:30 a.m., according to an autopsy, said Butler County Coroner William Young III. Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene. State police continue to investigate Hughes’ death but it did not appear suspicious, said Lt. Steve Ignatz. “It appears to be accidental,” he said, “but we’re looking at all the circumstances of what happened.” Trooper Ronald Kesten said investigators at 9 a.m. were still interviewing three other people, two males and a female, who were at the house at the time of the shooting. Police were notified of the shooting at 1:26 a.m., when someone at the house called 911, said Steve Bicehouse, director of county emergency services. Ignatz said police recovered the gun, a revolver, at the house. Police did not say who owned the gun. Police also did not immediately say who lives at the house. Kesten said it did not appear alcohol was involved in the shooting.
