The property owners of the Slippery Rock School District have spoken loud and clear: no new taxes.

The “golden goose” is about out of eggs, and the taxpayers can’t stand any more irresponsible management by either the administration or the school board.

The board was elected to represent taxpayers. It doesn’t seem to be doing its job.

We’re about taxed out, and it must stop.

My wife and I are in our mid-70s, retired and living on about half of a starting teacher’s salary. We pay more than $500 a month for health insurance, while teachers pay little.

And, the taxpayers are covering all the rest, plus benefits.

It’s time for this to change. They ought to pay their own way, as we have to do.

We are struggling to hang on to what we worked all our lives for, and the administration and school board just keep nibbling away at what we have.

We haven’t had children in school for more than 30 years, yet our taxes keep going up as though we still were sending them to school.

I think it’s time for the administration and board to get their statewide organizations moving and work with the state Legislature to develop another method of funding the schools. If they’d add a 1 percent state sales tax or possibly take some of the gambling revenues that we were promised and replace the school property tax, it could give all property owners the relief they so badly need.

I think it would be much fairer to all involved, and allow retirees to enjoy a little bit of their senior years.

There certainly is no balance in the current structure, and this must be brought under control.

At the very least, retirees over 65 who have no children in school should not have to pay school property taxes.
