Library offers edible house contest as treat for holiday
November 21, 2012
ZELIENOPLE — The Zelienople Public Library is getting into the holiday spirit by encouraging residents to enter an edible house contest. There’s no cost for interested participants, and winners in various age categories will receive gift cards for their efforts. Adult Services Librarian Amy Kellner said the library previously held the event in the summer as part of its “Christmas in July” event. It quickly became apparent, however, that the contest would be better suited for colder weather when some of the edible houses melted in the heat. Kellner said the rules are very simple for the contest: 75 percent of an entry must be edible, and it must be submitted between Monday and Dec 9. Voting will take place between Dec. 10 and Dec. 20, and members of the community will be the judges by submitting ballots at the library. Kellner said she’s expecting another round of interesting entries. Last year, participants submitted edible houses resembling castles, igloos and even a large courthouse. While the contest is designed to get residents in to the holiday spirit, Kellner said the participants and judges don’t get to partake in the fruits of their labor. “After sitting around for a couple of weeks and everybody looking at them and sneezing over them, nobody can eat them,” she said. “They’re out and displayed where the public can get to them.” Rules and more information can be found at the library’s website, www.bcfls.org/zelienople-public-library.
