Butler County's great daily newspaper

Pride in having voted

On Election Day, I was helping at the Slippery Rock Township building where a large number of Slippery Rock University students were voting. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm those students had as they voted in their first presidential election.

They were excited and eager to vote. Afterward, they wore their “I voted” stickers with pride, and many had their pictures taken by friends after they voted.

Two young men tramped through the woods after dark to make it to the polls to vote, even though they said their votes would cancel out each other’s vote.

My father, who passed away at age 96 in January, had framed above his bed a certificate he received from Butler County for having voted in every major election of his life. It was one of his proudest accomplishments.

It was great to see so many young men and women so excited and proud to say, “I voted.”
