Most readers might not know that the wheelchair-logo parking sign was intended for drivers confined to wheelchairs only. Obtaining such parking took more than two years and was done primarily by Vietnam veterans because they had to use two parking spaces to get their wheelchairs in and out of their cars and were being given tickets for using two parking spaces.

Today one can see the familiar wheelchair logo on single spaces too small for this purpose — and drivers not in wheelchairs using the spaces.

Initially, people obtaining the wheelchair logo parking spaces asked that the spaces be put in the back of parking lots because they knew the capacity for corruption. How many drivers not in wheelchairs would use them if they weren’t close to the doors of stores? The wheelchair logo was not intended for passengers in wheelchairs.

If other handicapped drivers want parking spaces designated for their medical disability, they should come up with their own logo and go through the lengthy process of obtaining such parking spaces. They should stop using those spaces designated for wheelchair drivers only.

I no longer drive, am in a wheelchair and get dropped off at the door of stores and banks, and for medical appointments.
