Abandoned oil well catches on fire today

BUFFALO TWP — Embers from demolition work Thursday night caught fire to what was left of an abandoned oil well on Harvey Road early this morning, authorities said.
The fire burned the wooden remnants of the one-time oil well site, said Chief Bill George of the Sarver Volunteer Fire Company.
“The well had been abandoned since he 1960s, he said, “and there wasn’t much left of it.”
Firefighters were called about 2:30 a.m. to the site and quickly extinguished the blaze.
The fire apparently began accidentally hours after the unknown owner was there Thursday night using a cutting torch.
“(The owner) was cutting up the steel there for scrap,” George. “The hot embers caught what was left of the wooden structure for the well on fire.”
