WASHINGTON TWP — A fire late last month that destroyed a former tavern has been ruled an arson.

State Police Fire Marshall Luke Nelson today said the determination was made after examinations of the scene at 1452 Branchton Road “ruled out all forms of accidental ignition sources.”

The 3,498-square foot building most recently housed the Just Inn Tavern and Grille.

But Nelson said that bar had closed in July, and the owner already had removed the bulk of equipment, appliances and other items with plans to reopen in Chicora.

Nelson said officials have not identified a suspect in the recent arson, but the investigation is on-going.

The fire began either late night Oct. 21 or early morning Oct. 22. The building was not occupied, and no one was injured.
