Mars must select new mayor

MARS — The borough must find a new mayor.
The borough council has 30 days from Oct. 20, the date of Mayor Dick Settlemire’s death, to appoint a new mayor. Its next meeting is Monday.
Council President Mike Fleming said Thursday that three residents have submitted their names for the position and more are expected.
Settlemire served as Mars’ mayor for 10 consecutive years before dying from a longtime illness. He was buried Oct. 24 in Mars Cemetery in Adams Township.
Shari Brewer, Butle County bureau of elections director, said the successful candidate will serve as mayor until the end of 2013. A permanent mayor will be elected in the fall of 2013 and sworn into office in January 2014.
The new mayor will serve a four-year term.
