PENN TWP — U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd, said that he has heard one main sentiment when talking to the people in the district

“They tell me they’re afraid,” Kelly told attendees of the Butler County Republican Committee fall dinner Tuesday at the Butler Country Club.

He said that they are afraid of things such as the increasing national debt and the possibility of decreased religious freedom under another four years of President Barack Obama.

Kelly, who is in his first term, is being challenged in the 3rd District by Democrat Missa Eaton of Sharon.

He said that three years ago he would not have imagined himself running for office. He did not know why someone would move from the private sector to government. Now, he said he knows.

“That’s what the founders intended,” Kelly said.

Kelly of Butler owns Mike Kelly Automotive in Penn Township, which was founded by his father in 1953.

“I am offended when the president says, ‘You didn’t build that,’” Kelly said. “We built this.”

He said that he and other people he has talked to believe in smaller government, more personal freedom and lower taxes. Additionally, he has an interest in using the many natural resources in the country, such as coal, oil and natural gas.

He said that he is a big supporter of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his vice presidential pick, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
