Amish pictures OK

In response to Larry M. Geibel’s Oct. 4 letter to the editor, “Photo violated Amish,” it is improper for an Amish person to pose for a picture, but it’s not improper to photograph one.

I have enlisted the skilled help of an Amish group from Smicksburg, Indiana County, for the past 10 months, off and on, to refurbish buildings on our family farm, utilizing between two and eight workers at a time. Before taking any pictures of them, I asked them about their beliefs.

Although each congregation rule might vary somewhat from others (there are more than 30 congregations in the Smicksburg area alone), the photo “rule” is widely accepted by all.

The Amish, as a group, probably are the most photographed group, at least in this part of America. To prevent this would require a totally reclusive lifestyle, of which these fine people are anything but.
