BUTLER TWP — The condition of a maintenance worker at the PennDOT garage on New Castle Road who suffered a serious hand injury Monday afternoon is not known this morning.
The worker, who authorities did not identify, was repairing an auger on the back of a salt-spreading truck about 1:15 p.m. when his right hand got caught, according to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials.
The Butler area man was working alone on the equipment repair at the department’s maintenance shed and the auger was running at the time.
A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to the injured worker, officials said.
Greenwood Village volunteer firefighters also assisted and set up a landing zone for a medical helicopter in a field behind the nearby Butler Crossing shopping plaza.
The worker was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment.
His condition was not known this morning, according to Deborah Casadei, a PennDOT spokeswoman.
