BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College is offsetting decreased student enrollment this year by trimming expenses.
Through Sept. 17, enrollment in traditional courses is down by 9 percent from the same date last year.
BC3 has 3,711 full and part-time students down from 4,155 students a year ago.
Adjusted to include 11 courses that are not yet accounted for in the college’s computer system, adding an estimated 130 students, 2012 enrollment by student count is down by 7.56 percent.
The college planned in advance for the revenue shortcomings by allowing several unfilled positions to remain open, refraining from hiring part-time staff normally needed to meet the needs of full enrollment and foregoing certain contracted services.
