Sheriff’s trip OK

Don WalkerButler Township

Regarding Itzi Meztli’s concern (May 22 letters to the editor) over Sheriff Mike Slupe’s attendance at the National Sheriffs Association conference in Nashville, Tenn., a few points need to be mentioned.
The convention is being held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort (probably due to the size of the convention center). The cost of the Hilton downtown is within $20 a night less, with no extra charge whether it’s one or two people.
If Slupe stayed elsewhere, he would need transportation to and from the convention; so, $60 a day would be added for a vehicle rental.
It’s important for sheriffs to attend a conference of this sort.
Meztli teaches at a university, and surely he must attend conferences from time to time. Having a daughter and her husband who teach at that level and with each having their doctorates, I have seen just how generous a university can be.
Therefore, let’s not talk about cheap motels and renting a bicycle for transportation.
The good news is that Slupe is attending a conference in Nashville and not receiving expenses for a conference in some major center to debate 14th century literature.
Slupe is an asset to the county, and if this furthers his endeavors, let him be — and, don’t mix him in with the county commissioners’ mess.
