Gas wells planned in Slippery Rock Township

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Shell wants to drill for Marcellus Shale natural gas in the township

The township supervisors at a public hearing Monday night heard from Shell regarding the company’s proposal for the first Marcellus Shale gas well in the township.

The proposed site is 142 acres at 672 Franklin Road. Construction of the well pad is expected to start in early 2012 with five wells at the site.

Shell is seeking a conditional use from the township.

Township solicitor Michael English said the supervisors cannot approve a permit for drilling because that is preempted by the state. However, the township can place restrictions on drilling.

Jim Sewell with Shell said the company has all the necessary permits from the state to drill. David Neill, township engineer, said the proposal meets state and township requirements.

The township’s planning commission will discuss the application Jan. 9, and the supervisors will vote later on the application.
