Judge declares mistrial in Sen. Orie case

PITTSBURGH — A mistrial was declared today in the political corruption trial of state Sen. Jane Orie.

The judge said a few defense documents were found to be forged or altered which calls into question all the evidence by the defense.

Because of that, he ruled for a mistrial, which means the case against Orie will have to be retried later. However, no date was set for when that might start.

The jury was deliberating this morning but the judge stopped that.

The prosecution brought the documents to the judge’s attention this morning.

Orie, R-40th, is charged with 10 counts, including theft of service, criminal conspiracy, tampering with evidence and violating the state’s Ethics Act.

She is charged by the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office for having state-paid workers in her offices do campaign work on state time.
