Griffins bring down The Rock

Amanda Mikatavage of Slippery Rock University finds her way blocked by Seton Hill's Jordan Burkes Wednesday in The Rock's 74-59 loss.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Laurel Heilman gazed down at a stat sheet sprinkled with red circles drawn by the Slippery Rock University women's basketball coach.

"The red means bad," Heilman said.

There was lots of bad — and lots of red ink — to look at after The Rock lost a 74-59 decision to Seton Hill at home Wednesday night.

The No. 23 for turnovers was circled. The 31 Seton Hill points that resulted from the miscues was inked. So was the paltry five offensive rebounds SRU tallied in 40 frustrating minutes.

"It wasn't even losing. It was how we lost," Heilman said. "Nobody likes to lose, but, to me, there is getting beat by a good team and being right there and ... not keeping it close. That's what's disappointing."

Early in the contest, it looked as though The Rock would run Seton Hill out of the gym — or bomb the visitors out of it.

SRU's first 18 points came on six 3-pointers on the way to an early 10-point lead.

But as the 3-pointers dried up, so did The Rock's momentum.

"(Assistant coach Tony Grenek) suggested going man, and we did it," said Seton Hill coach Ferne Labati.

Grenek, who once was the men's basketball coach at Butler County Community College, has been at Seton Hill for four years. Labati said she puts the defense in his hands.

The switch took away some of the open shots from the outside and SRU (0-2) struggled to mount any inside presence.

In the first half, The Rock made 6-of-12 shots from 3-point range, but just 2-of-9 shots inside the arc.

"Living by the 3s is not my philosophy," Heilman said.

Instead, Seton Hill lived by them.

After a 17-2 run to close the half gave the Griffins a 36-28 halftime lead, they started the second half with three 3-pointers in the first five minutes to build a 14-point advantage.

Seton Hill led by as many as 22 points late in the game.

"When the going gets tough, we're not doing a good job recovering," Heilman said.

In the second half, Seton Hill was 7-of-8 from 3-point range.

"We knew from last year they could all shoot," said Heilman, whose team beat Seton Hill on New Year's Eve last season.

Seton Hill (1-0) had four players score in double digits, led by Jordan Burkes with 18 points.

Julie Molloy paced Slippery Rock with 18 points and Nikki Presto added 15.

The Rock now has dropped its first two games of the season.

While Heilman might be going through a lot of red ink, she's nowhere near pushing the panic button.

"It's two games in and we have 10 new kids," Heilman said. "It is going to take some time."
