Firefighters snuff out Zelie house fire flames
ZELIENOPLE — Firefighters from three companies were able to contain a Tuesday morning fire to the second floor of a home at 609 W. New Castle St. The fire, which broke out about 11:30 a.m. in the single family home next to Universal Scaffolding, is believed to have started by someone smoking in bed that ignited a mattress in the bedroom, said Police Chief Jim Miller. A granddaughter of the unidentified homeowner and her boyfriend were home at the time when the fire occurred, but they were able to get out safely, Miller said. Firefighters from Zelienople, Harmony and Franklin Township, Beaver County, were able to douse the flames within 10 minutes of their arrival and save the building. Firefighters tossed out several mattresses and box springs from the second floor windows and sprayed them with water. Traffic was rerouted around West New Castle Street while fire crews were the house.
