Four families lose homes in blaze

CONNOQUENESSING TWP — Four families lost their homes in a fire that swept through four interconnected condominiums in Brandywine Village.

About eight people were evacuated safely from the building's four one-story units: couples in two of them and single adults in the other two, one of whom was baby-sitting children at the time.

The fire displaced:

• Mike and Karen Hartley at 1011 Springfield Court. Mike Hartley is the owner of Standard Bent Glass in East Butler.

• Margaret Seifert at 1012 Springfield Court.

• Ronald and Emily Buzza at 1013 Springfield Court.

• Matilda Betres at 1014 Springfield Court.

No one was injured.

Ten fire departments and more than 80 firefighters needed four hours to extinguish the fire, which broke out about 9:45 p.m.

The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross was on the scene, but each of the residents had family with whom they could stay.

The Connoquenessing, Meridian, Lyndora and Greenwood Village volunteer fire departments responded to the initial emergency call, assisted by Butler Ambulance.

Tanker trucks and additional firefighters were later called in from the Evans City, Harmony, Mercer Road, Penn Township, Prospect and South Butler volunteer fire departments as the fire progressed.
