Driver to be tried for friend's injury

He backed into her on July 1 in roadside accident

EVANS CITY — A man charged in an accident that left a 26-year-old woman bleeding and seizing on the side of Three Degree Road had his case held to court Wednesday.

District Judge Wayne Seibel said there was enough evidence to send the case to the Butler County courthouse.

Joshua Donald Black, 29, of Mars is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault while driving under the influence of alcohol and misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Seibel dismissed charges of reckless driving and accidents involving death or injury. Black's next court date is Aug. 17 in Butler.

The charges stem from an incident July 1 when Black and friends Charles "CJ" Cotto and Brandy Griffith were traveling home from a party in Cranberry Township.

When the trio came to the intersection of Downieville and Mars Valencia roads, the cap flew off Black's truck and landed on the road. Griffith and Cotto got out of the truck to retrieve the cap when Black backed up and the open passenger door struck Griffith on the head.

The accident left her unconscious and bleeding profusely with "severe facial injuries," according to Adams Township police officer Jack Linderman.

After the accident, Black and Cotto put Griffith in the truck to take her to a friend's house. However, she started to have a seizure in the back of the truck.

That's when Black flagged down a motorist and asked the driver to call 911, according to the police report.
