2 charged in accident that injured woman
ADAMS TWP — Two men have been charged for their roles in an accident that left a 26-year-old woman bleeding on the side of Three Degree Road on July 1.
Joshua Black, 29, of Mars faces driving under the influence of alcohol, aggravated assault by vehicle, reckless driving, and several counts of recklessly endangering another person as he was the driver of the truck that struck Brandy L. Griffith.
Black's preliminary hearing is July 15.
His passenger, Charles "CJ" Cotto, 32, of Valencia, is charged with obstruction, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
His preliminary hearing is July 29.
Police said when they arrived at Three Degree Road about 11 p.m., Griffith was unresponsive with a severe gash to her head.
As Griffith was being treated by emergency medical staff, Cotto became combative with police officers and allegedly threatened them. Officers said they thought they smelled alcohol on Cotto's breath and arrested him.
There had been some initial confusion at the scene because the woman refused to give police any information. The woman told police she withheld details of the accident because she didn't want the two men to get in trouble.
Griffith was later taken to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Black, who police identified as the driver, told police during questioning that Griffith was having a seizure in the vehicle and when he stopped the vehicle, she fell to the ground and had another seizure, hitting her head on the ground.
Black later told police the three had been at a party in Cranberry Township earlier in the evening and were traveling to the home of a friend of Griffith's when they somehow ended up on Downieville Road.
When they came to the intersection of Downieville Road and Mars Valencia Road, the cap flew off the truck and landed on the road, police said.
Both Cotto and Griffith got out of the truck, while Black backed up the truck. The passenger side door was left open, police said.
Cotto yelled to Black to back up farther to get closer to the cap because it was heavy. While backing more, the open door struck Griffith, knocking her to the ground where she was unconscious and bleeding profusely, police said.
Black told police he picked up Griffith and was going to take her to a friend's home and call an ambulance from there.
While driving, Griffith reportedly went into a seizure inside the truck.
Black said he stopped the truck on Three Degree Road and attempted to turn around to take her to the hospital.
However, the truck got stuck on a large rock and couldn't be moved. He then flagged down the first car to come by and asked its driver to call 911, according to court records.
