BUFFALO TWP — Authorities are searching for an Evans City area man accused of robbing the National City Bank on Route 356 earlier this month.

Edward Gene Clutter, 43, was identified from video footage taken by one of the bank's surveillance cameras.

"He's still on the run," said township police officer Tim Derringer on Wednesday.

More than $2,700 was taken during the May 6 robbery.

Special Agent Jim Kelvington, who is based in the FBI's Cranberry Township office, said two people called the FBI to identify Clutter after the video photograph was published May 7 with a Butler Eagle story.

"A couple of individuals saw the picture and identified (Clutter)," Kelvington said.

After Clutter was identified, authorities searched his Mars-Evans City Road apartment, which is between Evans City and Callery.

"He moved out," Kelvington said. "The apartment was cleared out."

But Kelvington believes Clutter didn't leave the Butler County area.

"I don't think he's fled very far," he said.

Authorities believe Clutter was not employed at the time of the robbery.

The people tipping off the FBI didn't have any further information about Clutter, such as his motivation for the robbery.

The FBI and township police also are searching for Clutter's car, a 1994 red Chevrolet Cavalier with the license plate number: GTZ-8564.

Anyone spotting Clutter or his vehicle should call 911.

"Hopefully, somebody will see him eventually," Derringer said.

A red car was seen parked outside the bank on video footage taken during the robbery.

Clutter allegedly walked in the bank around noon on May 6 and demanded money from a teller.

Making no indication of having a weapon nor wearing a disguise, Clutter shoved the cash into a shirt pocket and left.

"He didn't go to any other tellers," Derringer said.

Following the robbery, the teller hit the alarm.

A 911 dispatcher doesn't receive a bank alarm directly. The call goes through the alarm company which then notifies the county communications center.

Following the 12:02 p.m. call to township police, Derringer arrived at the bank at 12:05 p.m.

During the robbery, Clutter wore a burgundy, button-up fleece shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. He is about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs about 270 pounds.

No one was injured during the robbery, and a sole customer left the bank when Clutter entered.

Derringer said the photograph's good quality was important in identifying Clutter.

"The photo played a huge role in it," he said.

Before this case, the only criminal charges Clutter faced in Butler County was writing bad checks.
