Mail carrier praised
Written by: Joe Meyer
Franklin Township
There have been negative letters to the editor about mail delivery persons neglecting to pick up outgoing mail from mailboxes if none is being delivered. Not so of my letter carrier who delivers in our area of North Road from Reiber Road north to Unionville Road.

I am a former Butler Armco employee. I read with considerable interest the letters of Darryl A. Kirschner ("Reveal statistics' source," Aug. 10) and Rick Devore ("Letter lacked evidence," Aug. 12) regarding the candidacy of Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper for a second term.

DUI laws Draconian
Written by: James H. Matson
Butler
Jim Harff, in his Aug. 11 letter, "Jail, not 9th DUI arrest," accused the courts of being soft on a man who has suffered eight DUI arrests and was cited 15 times for driving with a suspended license. The typical salvo of "shame-on-you's" was delivered, as accompanies all statements of outrage against people who need professional help more than condemnation.

Viewpoints preposterous
Written by: Jim Patterson
Butler Township
In Joe LoBue's Aug. 6 letter, "Parties' priorities clear," he concludes that we should vote Democratic because only Demo-crats want to extend a helping hand to those who have lost a job, and because Democrats want to let the Bush tax cuts to the richest 5 percent expire.

Health 'system' boosted
Written by: Bill Oman
Slippery Rock Borough
Tax-supported health care is not "socialism." The new health care law is no more "socialistic" than the interstate highways that continue to be built with public funds by private contractors.

I am too smart to be a Demo-crat but too poor to be a Republican. People in both political parties bicker back and forth while missing the big picture.

Written by: Rosetta T. Rizzo

I read online the Butler Eagle article of Aug 15 about the plea arrangement of 29-year-old Matthew Menchyk of Butler Township, whose vehicle struck Joseph and Edward Pasqualini on Jan. 19, 2009, while they were walking on a highway in Slippery Rock Township. Menchyk's blood-alcohol level was recorded as 0.207, more than double the level considered intoxicated under state law.
