Butler, PA – The 40 year old national organization, PFLAG (Parents, Families, Friends of Lesbian and Gays) reports that 1 out 4 families have a member who is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. In May, The Western PA Regional PFLAG Coalition of local chapters (Pittsburgh, Butler, Erie, Greensburg, New Castle, and Washington), is hosting “Straight to PFLAG,” a month long campaign raising awareness about the importance of straight allies to the LGBT community.
Straight allies are the backbone of PFLAG and are defined as people who support LGBT family members and friends and challenge homophobia and transphobia.
As the mother of a gay son, in 1973 Jean Manford saw the cultural and legal oppression faced by the LGBT community and established the first PFLAG chapter in New York City. Having grown to over 350 chapters worldwide, PFLAG provides support, education, and advocacy to the LGBT community and their family and friends.
This year, The Western PA Regional PFLAG Coalition’s “Straight to PFLAG” campaign honors the memory of Ms. Manford and the role straight allies play in the community. During the month of May, each PFLAG chapter encourages straight allies to come learn more about PFLAG, its history, and its mission.
We hope that you can help us spread the word about “Straight to PFLAG” and are happy to make available local chapter members in your area to share their stories. For more information about PFLAG Butler’s plans for the month long campaign, please contact the following:
