In January 2011, after a routine check-up and blood work,
Emily Leyland, 28, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, commonly referred to as AML. Many patients with AML often require a bone marrow (stem cell) transplant to help battle this blood cancer. After many rounds of chemotherapy treatment and one failed stem cell transplant, Leyland received her second stem cell transplant in August 2012 and is currently a patient at UPMC Shadyside.
Leyland began dancing at the age of 2 1/2, and attended many workshops, conventions and competitions. She competed on winning groups at DMP Performing Arts Competitions at Seven Springs and in National competitions both locally and in New York City. Her love for dance grew and she even taught at the studio where she studied.
Now, her love for dance, and her recent battle to fight leukemia are now coming together in Danspirations. An event, put together by competing studios, who usually battle against one another - are now joining together to help raise awareness, and money to help Leyland fight AML.
During a Dance Masters of Pennsylvania Inc., Chapter 10 grand-body meeting, a member was giving a status report on Leyland’s fight, the escalating costs and lack of health insurance, when Carpelz Center For The Arts Owner Heather Goelz-Carpenter suggested doing something about it.
Goelz-Carpenter has been joined in organizing the event by Kat and Company in Morgantown in organizing a dance convention/fundraiser for Leyland
All proceeds from master class fees, donated dance raffles baskets, and silent auctions for scholarships to major dance convention/competitions will go to help Leyland’s cause.
