Sinking of LST 523 - The Account of Andy GrinnikType of Event: SPECIAL EVENTS
Date: November 11, 2012
Location: Passavant Retirement Community - Main Street, Zelienople, PA
Andy's granddaughter found an on-line account of the sinking of LST 523 off Utah Beach, Carenton France on June 19, 1944 when it hit a mine. 117 of 145 sailors and 94 of 200 soldiers on board were killed that day. One of the survivors was Andy Grinnik, Company C, 300th Combat Engineers. Andy was called to provide testimony the following November and his sworn affidavit is included on the website below. Like most veterans, none of his family had previously heard about his WWII experiences. Andy and his wife Lillian were life long residents of Butler and Lyndora until 5 years ago when they moved to Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople. His immediate family and extended family are gathering with him this Sunday, Veteran's Day - to present him with a framed copy of the story of LST 523 and his affidavit and to thank for his service to our country.
The time and speific location on Passavant's campus are being firmed up - so if you decide to cover this, please call me for final details. Thanks.
