A letter to the community of Slippery Rock:
Once again this year, Slippery Rock showed its colors when the America in Bloom judges arrived in mid-June. Our volunteers had planted tulips last fall that bloomed and looked spectacular in the spring. They weeded, fertilized, planted and watered wide varieties of flowers.
When the judges arrived, though our weather kept us three weeks behind our bloom schedule for our region, they understood the work that had been done. And as we all know, floral display is only one of six areas in which we shall again be rated in September.
We have spent this past year working on partnerships between borough, township, Butler County agencies, Slippery Rock University, Slippery Rock Business Association and of course, Slippery Rock Rotary.
Look at the flowers around the community and on campus. They’ll just get more spectacular as the summer and fall roll along. We have many visitors arriving for the major events coming through and we are proud of what you’ve done. You keep the streets free of litter, clean up cigarette butts and help keep the streets clean.
Thank you for respecting our community’s potential. We are vibrant, making us an attractive location for new businesses and a place that parents feel pleased to entrust their young college students to our care. We have had exceptional support from students from elementary through high school through college-age. We couldn’t have done it without them.
We continue to work on recycling issues and will support the SRU Rotaract youth group in their “Dump n’ Run” pickup in the spring. Thank you to our financial supporters and especially Slippery Rock Rotary who keeps the Slippery Rock in Bloom Program going.
