Butler Eagle tech director is appointed

“Mostly amazing with a chance for anything” is the way the newly appointed chairman of the Butler County Chamber of Commerce sees her upcoming year in this leadership role.
“It’s amazing that I have been given this opportunity, and when I think about that it makes me realize anything can truly happen here in Butler County and within the chamber organization,” said Tammy Schuey.
Schuey, 46, of Connoquenessing Township is the 2013 chairman of the chamber board of directors.
She is the technical director for the Butler Eagle and the managing director of Butler County Business Matters and New North, the Eagle’s business-to-business publications.
She is the first Eagle employee to lead the chamber in more than 50 years. John L. Wise served as chairman in 1929 to 1931, while Vernon Wise, served as chairman twice — from 1946 to 1948 and from 1952 to 1954.
Schuey said she is looking forward to helping the Butler business community grow by focusing on increasing chamber membership and by helping the entire community find ways to continue the region’s economic success.
Schuey said that by becoming the chairman, she hopes to honor those in Armstrong and Butler counties who supported her and her family through a string of losses that began with the accidental death of her husband, Jim Schuey, in 2006.
“Jim and I had done everything together,” she said. “Now, without my best friend, the pressure of raising our children as we had planned seemed insurmountable.”
Two months later Schuey’s grandfather died, and then her father, Karl “Speedy” Rottman, was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of 2007. Schuey took an active role in his health care, driving him to Pittsburgh for treatments. He died in May 2008.
“It was a bad and horrible time to go through. I lost the three men I held closest to my heart all within 18 months. I truly struggled with reasons to move on,” she said.
“But the support I received gave me time to get myself back together and it made me a stronger, more determined person,” Schuey said. “It makes you stand back and re-examine things. The little things don’t bother me anymore.”
Stan Kosciuszko, chamber president, said he looks forward to working with Schuey as chairman.
“She has been an active participant in our events and has proved her leadership skills as an officer during the past two years.
“I look forward to working with her on the aggressive agenda we have planned for the new year, and value her youth, enthusiasm and professionalism,” Kosciuszko said.
He said Schuey has assisted in planning and overseeing sessions for Leadership Butler County, business expos, annual dinner and trade shows.
“Tammy has proved that she is adept at planning, leading and rolling up her sleeves and ‘doing.’” Kosciuszko said.
A 1984 graduate of East Brady High School, Schuey started at the Butler Eagle in 1991.
Schuey was named 2006 Employee of the Year in Butler County by the chamber.
National recognition came in 2010 with Schuey being named an Editor & Publisher Production All Star.
