End farm subsidies

January 10, 2013 Letters to the Editor

Washington Post columnist Robert Samuelson’s Jan. 7 article criticizing the almost sacrosanct taxpayer subsidies to farmers is a welcome change from the chorus of politicians who are unable to end this Soviet-style socialist welfare program.

These subsidies have created such a massive market distortion that a free market is nowhere to be found in agriculture.

Moreover, why should taxpayers have their wealth confiscated to support that industry? What is required is a wholesale replacement of these false mercantilist wealth-destroying ideas with the economic law of comparative advantage, in order to optimize the functioning of the economy while respecting each individual’s right to his or her wealth.

If the domestic agriculture industry cannot operate without infusions of confiscated wealth, it should no longer exist.
